Job Description

Who is Risk Labs?

Risk Labs is the foundation and core team tasked with building and growing the UMA and Across protocol ecosystems.

What is UMA?

UMA’s Optimistic Oracle (OO) can record any verifiable truth or data onto a blockchain.

  • UMA Purpose: UMA is the canonical source of truth that blockchains use to verify real-world data.
  • UMA Vision: UMA enables any verifiable truth to be trustlessly recorded on-chain.

What is Across?

Across is a cross-chain bridge for L2s and rollups secured by UMA’s OO.

  • Across’ Purpose: Across aims to fulfill crypto’s potential by making blockchains more usable, more accessible, and more efficient.
  • Across’ Vision: Intents are the standard in cross-chain interoperability, and are settled by Across.

The Role

We are seeking a Data Engineer to design and scale our data infrastructure. As a data-driven organization, our data pipelines are essential team infrastructure. Your role involves architecting and building this infrastructure and collaborating with data analysts who depend on the pipeline. You should enjoy in-the-weeds engineering, appreciate project management and prioritization, and have a knack for leading people and teams to achieve their best work.

We believe that diverse candidates could be a great fit for this role. Whether you have experience building data pipelines in TradFi or technology firms and are curious about blockchain, or have focused on backend development with a strong understanding of blockchain data, we want to hear from you. Most importantly, we seek someone with deep expertise in creating ETL pipelines and working with data.

Responsibilities

  • Indexing Complex Onchain Data: Design systems that index complex onchain data for easy and quick access. Gas-efficient protocols rely on indexing to maintain a snappy, pleasant, and economical user experience.
  • Data Engineering: Design and develop large-scale data pipelines to fuel our understanding of users and our protocol’s real-world performance.
  • Code Review and Mentorship: Write code in a highly collaborative open-source environment. You will spend as much time reviewing and designing code as writing new code. We pride ourselves on writing clean code.
  • Leading and Scaling Teams: Manage priorities, scope deliverables, and project manage alongside various stakeholders. Think strategically about team coaching and structure while getting involved with data engineering work.
  • Data Analysis and Research: Translate business problems into scalable solutions based on strong intuition and a holistic view informed by analysis, research, data, and data engineering knowledge.
  • Product Mindset: Be naturally curious to deeply understand business needs and collaborate with product management, data science, engineering, marketing, etc., to drive impact through data.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of full-time experience in Data Engineering at a software, financial services, or related technology organization
  • 2+ years of experience with databases and data pipelines
  • 1+ year of experience managing people or teams (bonus if you’ve been part of scaling teams)
  • Outstanding critical thinking skills
  • Low ego, high curiosity, and comfort in being wrong
  • Strong coaching and communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and time management
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and write secure and clean code
  • Passion for blockchain technology, cryptonomic protocol design, game theory, and decentralized finance
  • Growth mindset; a desire to learn from and mentor those around you

Compensation and Benefits

  • Competitive salaries & meaningful token options
  • Salaries range from $120-190k (USD), with token allocation growing with voting rewards
  • Payment in stablecoins or fiat
  • Supportive work culture: Take vacation when needed, family care, training and development, etc.
  • 100% remote, encouraging you to create a thriving work environment
  • At least two team-wide offsites a year

Our Values

  • We value each individual’s right to economic freedom.
  • We value openness, honesty, and directness.
  • We value integrity.
  • We value iterative learning.
  • We value taking smart risks.
  • We value creating an environment where everyone “does their best work”.

  • UMA’s optimistic oracle serves as a decentralized truth machine for Web3, presenting exciting challenges and growth opportunities.
